Introduction to Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopathic medicine

Osteopathic medicine is based on the belief that the body alone is able to produce cures for diseases and disorders of the organism, when its structural relations are normal, its nutrition is good and it is in a good environment.

There are three principles of osteopathy:

  • body unity
  • structure governs function
  • the role of the arteries are supreme

When these three principles are satisfied, the body heals itself.

The underlying belief of osteopathy is that we are "wonderfully made", therefore, we already have the ability to defend ourselves against external stimuli.

The body thrives when blood, lymph and other body fluids circulate freely, and when the neurological, hormonal and skeletal system is integrated. This ensures freedom of movement of all tissues. When all parts of the body are linked to each other, a person gains his/her own identity, becoming a whole person while maintaining his/her uniqueness.

The role of the osteopath is to look at the whole person to seek the causes of the imbalance that generate the various pathologies. They do not rely on the patient's symptoms alone.

Osteopathic discipline
